Group Leader
Valerio Voliani, PhD
MSc in Chemistry and PhD in Molecular Biophysics from Scuola Normale Superiore (Pisa, Italy). Professor of Inorganic and General Chemistry at the Department of Pharmacy (University of Genoa), and affiliated researcher at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. His efforts are devoted to the: i) establishment of standard advanced biomodels of neoplasms, and ii) translation of hybrid nanotechnologies to the clinical practice to promote non-invasive treatments of carcinoma. His main interests are photothermal conversion, drug delivery, combined photo/chemo- or chemo/radio-treatments, and development of alternative cancer models. He is actively engaged in scientific dissemination.
Senior PostDoc
Patrizia Sarogni, PhD
MSc in Biology, and PhD in Molecular Medicine and Medical Biotechnology at the University of Naples Federico II. She is an AIRC-supported postdoc at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. During her career she studied the role of DNA repair, gene expression regulation, and chromosome instability in the onset of cancer. She also experienced with rare genetic disorder associated to cardiovascular defects such as lysosomal storage diseases and Cornelia de Lange syndrome. Dr. Sarogni is currently involved in the development of in vivo alternative biomodels to evaluate the performance and toxicity of conventional/emergent therapeutics at the molecular level and to promote the advancement of innovative approaches to the clinical practice for the treatment of oral, pancreatic, and neuronal cancers.
Researcher
Alessandra Gonnelli, MD
Graduated in Medicine, Specialized in Radiation Oncology, and PhD in Clinical Physiopathology. During her career, she developed a strong interest in cancer research with a focus on translational research to establish new therapeutical approaches. Her research interests include the development of non-persistent noble metal nanoparticles for combined therapy and their evaluation on alternative biomodels. Currently, she is also working for the Radiation Oncology Department of Santa Chiara Pisa Hospital.
PhD Student
Noemi Giannini, MD
Graduated in Medicine, Specialized in Radiation Oncology, and PhD student in Clinical and Translational Sciences at the University of Pisa. During the medical specialization, she has gained experience in management of chemotherapy and radiotherapy (including related toxicities), in both 3D-CRT and IMRT (VMAT) treatment delivery, and patients care path. She is also actively engaged in ongoing clinical trials, especially regarding head-neck and central nervous system cancers. She is currently involved in the development of vascularized cancer models for the evaluation of synergistic co-therapies of oral and pancreatic carcinoma.
PhD Student
Federico Purificato
BSc in Clinical Engineering and MSc in Nanotechnology Engineering at Sapienza University (Rome). He is a PhD Student in Nanoscience at Scuola Normale Superiore and Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. His research interests include the establishment of hybrid nanotechnologies based on 2D materials for the treatment of carcinoma.
PhD Student
Valentina Frusca
BSc in Physics (Milano-Bicocca University), and MSc in Materials and Nanotechnology at the University of Pisa. She is a PhD student in Translational Medicine at Scuola Sant'Anna (Pisa). Her research interests include the developement of nanomaterials for combined cancer therapy.
PhD Student
Gloria Pizzoli
Graduated in Pharmacy at the University of Perugia with a Master thesis in organic chemistry regarding organoselenium compounds and photochemistry. PhD student in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Genoa. Her research interests include nanomaterials and oncology.
PhD Student
Giovanni Gadducci
BSc in Physics (Milano-Bicocca University), and MSc in Materials and Nanotechnology at the University of Pisa. She is a PhD student in Translational Medicine at Scuola Sant'Anna (Pisa). Her research interests include the developing of nanomaterials for combined cancer therapy.
Graduated in Medicine and Surgery, Specialized Radiation Oncology, PhD student in Clinical and Translational Research at University of Pisa. During his residency, he has gained experience in the treatment of neoplasms with external radiotherapy, brachytherapy, and systemic therapy. His research interests regard ultra-high dose rate radiotherapy and alternative biomodels.
